Get involved in the AAP!
There are lots of ways to get involved with the AAP at a DC, district and national level, and here are just a few ideas. If you have any questions, just e-mail your AAP Reps: Jess Weisz (JWeisz@cnmc), Ankoor Shah (AnShah@cnmc), Amanda Page (AmPage@cnmc).
-Local DC AAP Chapter:
1. Areas of focus by the DC AAP leadership include: Adolescent health working group; Communication and media committee; Advocacy committee; Park Prescription project; DC Collaborative for Mental Health; Breastfeeding committee; Lead initiatives.
How to get involved: If you have an interest in any of above, email one of us so we can connect you with the specific project manager from the DC AAP. Resident involvement can include helping with promotion of events and initiatives, working with community leaders, etc.
-District AAP:
DC is part of District 3 along with AAP members from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Our district coordinator is Lisa Costello, and our assistant district coordinator is Danna Qunibi. See http://www2.aap.org/sections/ypn/r/resident/districts/districtiii.html for more information.
1. Leadership Workshops
Our district would like to develop leadership workshops where experts and leaders in pediatrics do on-site training sessions for medical students, residents and fellows. Potential topics for workshop discussions include: student debt/finances, AAP involvement, becoming a community leader in the areas of poverty, media and kids, early child brain development and firearm injury prevention.
How to get involved: They’re looking for residents interested in taking an active role in planning these workshops. Please email Danna (dannaqunibi@gmail.com) and/or Lisa (costello.lisa@gmail.com).
2 Quarterly Newsletter
Contribute to a quarterly newsletter produced by District 3 which features articles written by residents about resident activities. Articles range in topics. You can read previous newsletters at the above link.
How to get involved: Write an article (or pitch an idea and we can help with the actual writing)! The deadline for the next newsletter is approaching in the next 2 months, so you have plenty of time to be creative. Email your AAP Reps with any complete or partially complete musings.
-National AAP:
1. P.A.V.E. Advocacy Campaign
The 2013-14 AAP SOMSRFT advocacy campaign this year is P.A.V.E. (Pediatricians Against Violence Everywhere), and the goal is to P.A.V.E. the way to firearm injury prevention. This is a national campaign, and programs across the country will be developing projects at both a clinic and community level as well as at the state and federal level in an effort to reduce gun violence in children. See http://www2.aap.org/sections/ypn/r/advocacy/PAVE.html for more information.
How to get involved: Your AAP reps have already been actively involved in this issue, but we’d love to hear your ideas and have you get involved. Beyond us, efforts are being organized at the district and national level so email our district coordinator Lisa (costello.lisa@gmail.com) know if you are interested on taking a more active role.
