Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Hospital-Based Careers (HBC) Pathway?
The Hospital-Based Careers (HBC) Pathway was developed to increase exposure to elements of practice important for all hospital-based careers. The pathway is geared towards residents interested in careers based entirely or frequently in the hospital setting. These include but are not limited to: hospitalist (community, academic, or fellowship bound), critical care medicine, emergency medicine, and neonatology. Residents who plan a hospital-based focus on cardiology, nephrology, hematology/ oncology, or a number of other specialties may also find this pathway helpful. The pathway consists of three main elements described below.
Residents use reflection on their personal goals and the competencies provided to select which pathway opportunities to incorporate into their learning plans. Residents' options for participation range from limited participation using a few components of the curriculum, to complete participation where most competencies and special sessions are incorporated into their plans.

Who should consider the HBC Pathway?
Any resident in the 2nd half of PL1 year through PL3 can participate in the HBC pathway if you're interested in gaining skills related to inpatient practice. Since a pathway contains no required rotations, residents in any track can participate in any pathway.

Who directs the HBC Pathway?
Aisha Davis MD (Hospitalist and Associate Residency Program Director) directs the pathway in collaboration with many other faculty. Suggestions from participants have been the most useful to enhance the curriculum.
