Inpatient Rotation Objectives
These are the Inpatient Adolescent Goals and Objectives. Please perform a self-assessment early on in the rotation so that you can target your learning in specific areas of weakness. These rotation objectives will be part of your overall rotation evaluation.
By the end of this rotation, you should be able to:
1. Evaluate and manage patients with eating disorders in an inpatient setting (for example, following the Eating Disorder protocol accurately).
2. Identify, evaluate, and manage inpatients with dysfunctional uterine bleeding (this includes accurately assessing need for blood transfusions).
3. Distinguish PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) from other causes of lower abdominal pain in adolescent patients, and create an appropriate treatment plan (this includes understanding the indications for performing pelvic exams.
4. Generate a differential diagnosis for common presenting complaints in AIDS patients, e.g., nausea/vomiting, headache, diarrhea, or cough and manage opportunistic infections.
5. Identify and manage barriers to medication adherence (for example, with OCPs, antibiotics, HIV medications).
6. Modify language for family-centered rounds when presenting adolescent-sensitive issues, maintaining respect for patient confidentiality.
7. Gather and present a thorough social history, utilizing the HEEADDSS or SHADES, CRAFFT, and/or FIST pneumonics.
