Roseline Debbie Vaaltyn BSN, RN, MS
Ambulatory Nurse Manager
I have 28 years’ experience as a registered nurse, specializing in Pediatrics for the past 25 years. At present I work as an Ambulatory Nurse Manager at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C.
I graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing Spring 2017 with a Master’s degree in Community/Public Health. Some of the courses incorporated in my program included Program Planning, Leadership and Research, which prepared me for my current role and activities.
I believe in proactive action and tend to be obsessed with failure, i.e. identifying gaps in safety that poses a risk to our patients, staff, and the organization as a whole. My next step is to take action to mitigate this risk, e.g. ensuring staff competencies are completed, patient care equipment remains safe for use, writing protocols/guidelines, working on process improvement initiatives, etc. I am also a firm believer in staff satisfaction. In my experience, if staff is content, knowing that the person who leads them is willing to walk beside them; that their voices are heard whether it carries a concern, suggestion for improvement, or personal discord, they are more likely to give their best.
To me, it is important to form meaningful relationships at my place of work, with a constant awareness that there is always something to learn from those around me, whether it is when to be silent or when to be assertive, how to embrace humility even in difficult circumstances, and when to smile when all you want to do is cry. These are some of the lessons learned from others that enable my personal and professional growth, and provide me with balance, in an unbalanced world.
