What if I do not have a local mentor?

We do request that HEAR-PHM scholars have a local mentor. The mentor does not have to be in the division of hospital medicine and can be in another division or department.  We feel that a local mentor is important for the success of the scholar to conduct their scholarly work and share their learnings from the HEAR-PHM program with their institution.

How will applications be scored and evaluated?

HEAR-PHM Selection Committee and Advisory Board will be reviewing and selecting the scholars. We aim to build a cohort of individuals who represent diverse demographic characteristics, as well as different regions and institutions. Scholars can have a range of prior research experience (minimal to extensive research experience). Scholars should have a successful track-record of project completion – these projects do not have to be traditional research projects, and can be projects in operations, quality improvement, education, work-force development, etc.  All selected scholars will have a commitment to health equity and DEI, and desire to advance their research career and trajectory.

When will we hear back if we are accepted to the program?

We aim to share decisions with scholars in April 2025.

When will sessions take place and how often?

Program sessions will begin in September 2025 and continue to July 2026. These didactic and small group work sessions will be virtual. In addition, we will host an in-person session at the Pediatric Hospital Medicine annual conference in 2026.

Do we have to attend annual PHM in-person?

Yes, we would like HEAR-PHM scholars to join in-person at the annual PHM meeting to build community and for networking The current, enrolled cohort will be provided limited funding to attend the PHM meeting. This travel funding will be limited to the active cohort only, but we will encourage prior cohorts to join HEAR-PHM activities.

Is 10% FTE required for me to join HEAR-PHM?

Yes, we request an institutional letter of support from Division Chief or Department Chair stating that 10% FTE will be given for HEAR-PHM. We feel that this letter of support is important to ensure success of the scholar in the HEAR-PHM program and success of future application for research growth.
